The Ripps

The Ripps were formed in Coventry by the brothers Patch and Raul Lagunas out of their mutual love of the late 70’s punk bands The Clash, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols during the summer of 2004. After early support slots with Maximo Park and Editors the band were highlighted in the 2006 NME ‘Best Midlands’ feature on the emerging West Midlands live scene.  They were signed to Catskills Records shortly afterwards.  The Ripps released their debut album “Long Live The Ripps” through Catskills on 19th February 2007. They went on to tour the UK extensively to promote the album which included notable appearances at Glastonbury Festival and a one off show at Razzmatazz in Barcelona.

Having started recording their second album with the Grammy award winning local legend Roger Lomas, original drummer Rachel Butt left the band to pursue a career in law.  During this time, they received an unexpected phone call from Lynval Golding of The Specials inviting them to support The Specials for several dates of their 2009 reformation tour.  With only six weeks to rehearse, they auditioned two new members, Alan Ferguson on bass and Phil Cox on drums.   The shows turned out to be a resounding success.

The band didn't just switch faces - they went back to the drawing board to create a fresh musical template too and in 2010 they decided to join forces with producer John Moonbear at The Moonbase Recording Studio to forge their new sound. During this period they recruited two more members, Terry Muttitt on Keyboards and Laurel McIntosh on backing vocals.

The Ripps released their ‘Lovesick’ EP on the 6th July 2011, demonstrating their new sound and drawing comparisons to The Cure and early Elvis Costello.  This also led to a couple of the tracks being featured on Hollyoaks and various other TV ad campaigns.

Now with a new lineup, a new sense of purpose and with typical Coventrian dogged determination The Ripps have just finished recording their long awaited second album.   Songs about life, love and loss set in the city that inspired them. 100% DIY 100% Made In Coventry.
